Microsoft Defender for Endpoint

Microsoft Defender for Endpoint is a unified pre- and post-breach enterprise defense suite. It natively coordinates detection, prevention, investigation, and response across endpoints, identities, email, and applications to provide integrated protection against sophisticated attacks.

With the shift to remote work, organisations of all sizes prioritise equipping their staffs with full-featured antivirus software to cope with cyber-attacks. It is essential to use a complete endpoint security solution designed to tackle sophisticated cyber-attacks which provides endpoint protection, endpoint detection and response, vulnerability management, and mobile threat defense.

The threat landscape is getting more complicated than ever. Organizations with limited resources are attempting to keep up while also ensuring that they have a Zero Trust security strategy that evolves in response to ever changing threats and organizational expectations.

The endpoint is one of the most targeted attack surfaces as new and sophisticated malware and ransomware continue to be prevalent threats. While we enter the second half of 2021, ransomware continues to persist and develop, with financial damages continuing to escalate.

Being broadly digitalized and having high-level internet penetration, Singapore is an attractive target for ransomware groups and attacks. Commonly targeting critical sectors, where service delivery is essential.

Therefore, organizations must focus on cybersecurity measures to protect themselves. This cyber-attack impact is across a wide variety of businesses, including both the private and public sectors, and it’s not just big businesses that are vulnerable.

Guidance for businesses:

  • Have strong tools to safeguard employees and infrastructure. Which means looking into multi-layered defense systems and turning on multi-factor authentication (MFA) as employees work from home.
  • Enable endpoint protection and protect against shadow IT and unsanctioned app usage with solutions like Microsoft Cloud App Security.
  • Ensure employee guidelines are communicated clearly to employees. Including information on how to identify phishing attempts, distinguishing between official communications and suspicious messages and emails that violate company policy, and where these can be reported internally.
  • Choose a trusted application like Microsoft Teams for audio/video calling and file sharing (SharePoint & OneDrive) that ensures end-to-end encryption to safeguard your data.

Guidance for individuals:

  • Update all devices with the latest security updates and always use an antivirus or anti-malware service.
  • Be alert to links and attachments, especially from unknown senders.
  • Connect to secured networks and maintain secure backups.
  • Use multi-factor authentication (MFA) on all accounts. Most online services provide a way to use your mobile device or other methods to authenticate users and protect your accounts in this way.
  • Get educated on how to recognize phishing attempts and report suspected encounters, including watching out for spelling and bad grammar, and suspicious links and attachments from people you do not know.
  • Do not give personal information unless required and use strong passwords.

Microsoft continues maintains its strong position in terms of market knowledge and innovation. Defender for Endpoint and the protection engines built into Windows 10 have grown in leaps and bounds over the course of the year, with new features added to each Windows release to provide a comprehensive set of security layers.
